Tips for Cleaning an LCD Screen

Many of us do not realize that cleaning the LCD screens in our homes and offices is different from cleaning an older type television or computer monitor. These LCD screens are much more fragile than you can believe. The old method of spraying with window cleaner and wiping with a paper towel can be dangerous to your screen. An LCD is actually covered with a soft coating that can be damaged much more easily than glass.

The first step is probably going to be a bit of shopping. Paper towels are too rough for your screen, so purchase a micro fiber cloth. Also purchase a speciality LCD cleaner such as PixelClean or Klear Screen. There are many other providers of LCD screen cleaners and even entire kits that include proper cleaning clothes. An alternative to purchasing a speciality cleaner is to mix equal parts of distilled water and rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle.

Now that you are armed with your supplies it is time to clean. First power down the screen and disconnect from power.

Use your micro fiber cloth to remove any dust.

Spray the LCD cleaning solution onto your micro fiber cloth. NEVER spray the cleaner directly onto the screen. It can run down into the area below and beside the screen which can cause problems. Wipe in a circular motion using caution to not catch the screen with your fingernails which can cause scratches. Do not press on the screen as you clean. A very light touch is just right.
